Education Crusade & Denver Shooting

A COMPARISON:
The Recent Denver School Shooting
vS.
The Current Situation at WCSD Schools

Could It Happen Here?

Background:

A 17 year-old high school student in Denver brought a gun to school on March 22 and shot 2 administrators while being searched for weapons at the school entrance. The shooter committed suicide several hours later.    (Links included at the end)

  • The Denver Shooter came to school that morning 2 hours late.

The student should NEVER have been admitted to school 2 hours late without a parent checking them in with a plausible excuse. There are MANY reasons why students are excessively late…and NONE of them are good.

WCSD High Schools allow students to check-in hours late on a daily basis.

  • The Denver Shooter was enrolled in his school even though he’d been thrown out of his previous one for a gun-in-school conviction, failed to complete a diversion program, and required a daily weapons search because his behavior was so unpredictable.  Denver’s school superintendent said allowing students with similar serious convictions to keep attending “is a COMMON occurrence in public schools.”(?)  He added that he was planning to meet with the shooter’s parents and tell them that “the district had failed their son” We could find no quote from the supt. regarding his feelings about the 2 innocent administrators who were shot by the student.

WCSD has MULTIPLE schools where students have threatened to bring guns to school and kill students and staff, and received no punishment (Dilworth, Wooster, etc.)  When responding to questions about WCSD students committing violent acts against teachers and students, Supt. Susan Enfield has repeatedly stated her concern for the assaultive students and blamed their behavior on – among other things – “the pandemic.” Enfield has publicly stated that she doesn’t believe consequences necessarily change behavior, and recently recommended to her principals in a memo that an effective way to prevent school violence was to become familiar with her “Behavior Matrix/Manual.”

Students at the Denver shooter’s school said, “Violence and lockdown drills have become routine parts of the school day.”

WCSD’s Hug and Wooster high schools recently had several large-scale riot/fights and several Code Yellow lockdowns within less than 48 hours.

The Denver shooter’s school had ANOTHER student shot and killed near the campus about 6 weeks ago.

WCSD’s North Valleys High School had a student stabbed to death in a nearby neighborhood about 6 weeks ago.

Denver’s School Board and supt. said nothing about the need to enforce the existing school rules and state laws more strongly. Instead, they scheduled a special meeting to discuss the shooting and school security, decided to put 2 armed police on the campus, and blamed the shooting on not enough gun control laws.

WCSD’s School Board and Supt. have ALSO said nothing about the need to enforce existing school rules and state laws more strongly. They, too, scheduled a similar meeting to discuss violence and safety. They committed several hundred thousand dollars to purchase ONE ‘gun-sniffing” dog who will be responsible for “sniffing” 60,000 students at 100+ schools. Most of them also believe stronger gun control laws are a solution.

Parents at the Denver high school have expressed frustration that the superintendent and school board are not adequately protecting their children.

Parents at WCSD Schools?  Ditto.
