Bethany Drysdale’s Controversial Actions: Uncovering the Truth Behind Washoe County’s Communications Manager

In recent developments within Washoe County, Communications Manager Bethany Drysdale has come under scrutiny for her actions, particularly a recent FOIA request that has raised questions about her motives and the accuracy of her claims. This critique aims to delve into the details of this controversy while shedding light on the potential consequences of her actions on the county and its residents.

In the FOIA request we learned, Bethany Drysdale lobbied Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo to not appoint Tom Green, whom she labeled as a right-wing extremist with the potential to lower morale among county staff. However, it’s worth noting that Tom Green had previously managed a significant portion of one of Nevada’s largest government agencies Washoe County Sheriff Office with distinction, achieving high morale and record efficiency during his leadership. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam commented in June 2023 Green was one of the best cold case investigators the Sheriff’s Department has ever employed. This raises concerns about the accuracy of Drysdale’s claims and the agenda she may be following, influenced by County Manager Eric Brown, the failing manager who hired her.

Additionally, questions arise regarding Drysdale’s role in reporting on the number of deaths at the Nevada ‘Cares’ Campus. Instead of directly releasing coroner records, she serves as a middleman in the process, leading to inquiries about a potential PR slant on the issue. The lack of documented sources for the data reported by the Reno Gazette Journal adds to the skepticism surrounding her actions.

While Drysdale received recognition as Communicator of the Year in 2022 from This is Reno, it’s essential to consider differing perspectives. Some, like Our Town Reno, have waited days for a response from Drysdale when handling inquiries. An incident involving a delayed response to a call about a deceased individual highlights these concerns in September 2023. Drysdale was also less than forthcoming to Commissioner Mike Clark who was trying to get to the bottom of this reported death outside the Washoe County 9th Street Senior Center, and Ms. Drysdale chose to ignore Clark’s pleas for information.

Moreover, Drysdale has accused Tom Green of being a far-right, fringe individual and a member of Washoe Patriots, claims that have been refuted and are untrue. This raises questions about the basis for such accusations and whether they are justified. If Ms. Drysdale is willing to make assertions without concrete proof against Tom Green, what information is she willing to spoon-feed to the residents of Washoe County at the behest of Manager Brown.

Nevada Liberty has questioned whether Tom Green should seek legal action against Bethany Drysdale for these baseless allegations, even pondering the authenticity of a county public relations employee willing to tarnish the reputation of a first responder retiree. Mr. Green however doesn’t have a taxpayer funded $150,000 pot of money for “legal and personal services” as Brown’s county employees do if they are “unfairly publicly attacked, harassed, or disparaged by members of the public or political organizations.” Has this empowered Drysdale to think she can “unfairly publicly attack” Tom Green while being protected by Eric Brown’s dissident attack fund? When will it stop? Will Ms. Drysdale target other Washoe County residents? Being protected by ‘the fund’ Drysdale can attack you, or any other citizen; but if you express dissent and County Manger Brown opts to use the dissident attack fund, your taxpayer dollars will be hiring a private investigator, public relations firm and a lawyer to sue you.

In conclusion, the controversy surrounding Bethany Drysdale’s actions and statements warrants a closer examination of their accuracy, motivation, and potential consequences for Washoe County. When the media gets data from Drysdale, at the very least, they should demand a backup second county employee verification (Nancy Leuenhagen) with full documentation to verify the information is correct. As residents, it is essential to distinguish between truth and potentially biased information protecting county programs, and to seek transparency and accountability in county communications.

Nevada Liberty: 1. Should Bethany Drysdale remain employed as Washoe County Communications Manager? 2. Has Washoe County Manager Eric Brown failed in his oversight role? 3. Has Bethany Drysdale broken trust with the community she is paid by our tax dollars to represent? 4. If she had demonstrably colluded in the past to spin a partisan narrative with commercial media would your opinion change? Tweet your thoughts to @nevada_liberty on X.
